InSpyred








TRP Spyre mechanical disc brake is widely recognised as being the best mechanical system going and little surprise they were a popular site at last week’s Cycle show. Numb of bum and brain, I took a break from deadlines and fitted mine to the Ilpompino on Tuesday afternoon. Twenty minutes, a new inner wire, some perfectionist re-wrapping of the bars and shot of PTFE lube later, we were ready for the lanes. 

I’ve always rated Avid’s BB7 but the spyre’s just a much nicer system full stop.

Both have been popular sights on the cyclo cross scene for a few years now, although they are fundamentally different designs. The Avids are a single piston design, whereas the Spyre uses two, meaning braking force is shared equally between both pads, which are effortlessly adjusted via the barrel adjuster (or from the bars in a race context). Single piston adjustment requires dismounting, annoying on a long winter ride but potentially the difference between first and second on a muddy race circuit.   

Correctly set up, this ensures uniform pad and rotor wear. With a compression-less cable, like for like, the Spyre feels marginally more powerful but modulation and feel are the greatest improvements. I also prefer the sleeker profile, which may offer some negligible aero advantage but bereft of wind tunnel facilities, I’ll settle for a sharper aesthetic and 20g saving.   

Darker nights are seeing a procession of high power blinkies and main systems, including Moon’s shield X auto. It’s a sophisticated 9 mode model with a maximum output of 80 lumens and interestingly, a light sensitive auto on/off setting. This gives the option of the light engaging via a sensor, once the light dips beyond a certain level. Not a new concept; Shimano’s nexus dynamo switch and several others have used similar technology, although admittedly, its comparatively rare on safety lights. 

Arguably and it its simplest, all you’ll need is two functions-constant and flashing but I’ve always liked a selection, of varying output and patterns. There are four steady and four flashing, with another daylight setting. Thankfully a mode memory means it defaults to your last choice, which makes life easier, especially if you have a favourite.  

Rule of thumb says 15-20 lumens is more than sufficient for urban riding. Rural contexts call for something brighter.

Specification is comparable with other bells n’ whistles models. COB (Chips on Board) technology means diodes are placed directly onto the circuit board, thus creating a more intense pattern of light.

In this instance the Cree XPE+ diode is joined by another 20. A CNC machined aluminium casing serves as a heat sink, keeping them cool, for a long and productive life. Lens and reflector quality have a big part to play, this casts a 270 degree cloak of light, which gives plenty of peripheral presence, while the collimator lens projects a very strong spot to nail the attention of approaching traffic.

 I’ve used  and been suitably impressed by the original Shield and formative impressions suggest this version is a very capable safety light but we’ll have more to say a few weeks down the line.

I’ve also taken delivery of this four mode, Xeccon Zeta 1300 lumen front light, which the Chinese marque claims is designed for both mountain biking and city riding. The diminutive lamp is nicely executed from CNC machined aluminium alloy for durability and heat dispersing qualities.

This meets IPX6 for weatherproofing, meaning water-resistant unless fully immersed and houses a single Cree XHP50 diode and switch. This attaches to the bars via a surprisingly neat bracket, slightly reminiscent of Go Pro types and choice of sturdy O rings.

As we’ve come to expect, there’s also a helmet mounting option and the 8.4volt 5200aMH battery pack is both smaller and lighter than photos suggest. This is reckoned to fuel the light’s 1300 lumen mode for a very respectable 3.5 hours, although a full charge means 5 hours and 30 minutes-from the mains. Looking at the couplings, I am fairly confident that other, pattern packs are interchangeable.

Technically, the neoprene carry sack will play nicely with a top tube bag; though in the Ilpompino’s case, I’ve substituted mine for the cavernous Axiom Grand Fondo wedge pack.   

Depressing the lamps’ positive centre mounted switch for two seconds brings it to life, subsequent presses cascade through the settings. This also employs the familiar traffic light battery-life indicator and it’s perfectly aligned within rider eye-line.  There’s also a remote wireless trigger for convenience.

First impressions-a quick hour’s blast along the lanes, suggests a good hybrid spot/flood combining sufficient navigational clout for serious speed with a decent arc providing presence a plenty. Unlike the ubiquitous auction site specials, lens and reflector quality means there’s no dazzling of rider or other road users.

Other traffic, including SUVs have dips their beams from full to main at car typical distances too.  I was surprised by how warm the casing had become during the ride but then again, we’re not in digit singing territory. Dollars, Discs & Distractions















 
I was contacted by someone via “Up work” inviting me to write for them this week.  Keeping an open mind, I responded asking for their exact specification-sign of the times perhaps but, these sites tend to foster a race-to-the-bottom mindset where remuneration’s concerned.
A few minutes later, I received a further email offering me $17 Canadian dollars for a 1,000 word feature including photographs! "Up yours" was a tempting retort but rather than dignify this with a response, I decided stripping and cleaning the Ilpompino’s disc setup was a more positive use of my energies.
Avid’s BB7 is a markedly easier system to adjust than their justly popular BB5 but mine had become misaligned, causing the inboard pad adjuster to brush the spokes. I hadn’t taken a spill, or incurred similar trauma but a thorough back to basics exorcism seemed the most remedy.
Removing the front wheel and inspecting the 160mm Shimano rotor confirmed it was perfectly true and snug aboard the hub. Next stage was to disconnect the cable and reseat the calliper. 5mm Allen and 25 torx keys at the ready, I slackened the mounting hardware; then wound the pad adjusters out, before driving then fully home against the disc rotor. Centring the calliper is simply a matter of pushing it against the fork mount and then tightening the mounting screws.
Strictly speaking, I should’ve reconnected the cable at this point but was following my own intuitive flow, centralising the pads and double checking everything by spinning the wheel. Cable reconnected, a very gentle whisper was corrected by a quick turn of the outboard pad. Spinning the wheel and engaging the Cane Creek lever ten times to verify (and/or placate my advancing neurosis); I repatriated tools and drizzled a little more lube on the chain. Unfortunately Writer’s block was still a sitting tenant, so my attentions turned to mowing lawns before they assumed jungle status and while October still permitted.
Down time paid off, since paragraphs and inspiration flowed consistently once I’d settled back at my middle aged desktop. Four days and 100miles hence verified everything’s behaving impeccably and while I’ve a thing for fierce brakes and solid lever action, allowing fractionally more cable slack has rewarded with more progressive stopping, though pulled in anger, there’s sufficient wallop to raise the rear several inches from the ground.
That Bobbin bar wrap continues to impress with its stylish, shock absorbing properties. Tenure bare handed, even in the wet is pretty impressive too; not that I ride without gloves with any regularity.
The G-Eye2 action is another pleasant surprise and a definite improvement on its predecessor. Whether it’s a poor man’s Go Pro, in much the same sense Triumph’s GT6 was to Jaguar’s E-Type remains to be seen, although it does illustrate how far budget tech has come along in recent years.
Recording quality is good and ideal for developing video reportage skills but the Go Pro will shoot professional grade footage, whereas the G-Eye 2 is firmly in enthusiast hobbyist territory. 
Despite daily rides of 20miles plus, sometimes the walls can start metaphorically closing in. Needing some inspirational escape, I headed out in the Micra with my trusty NEX5 and stopped off at Maldon Shot Blasting & Powder Coating.
Alongside various classic Porsche shells and a 1966 GT40 race car, the methyl chloride tank was making short work of this MG BGT’s blue 2pac paint, revealing plenty of filler and the original orange livery beneath.
This scabby but otherwise sound Specialized Rockhopper built from a Ritchey Nitanium steel alloy tubeset was also awaiting blast and pale blue powder coat makeover and certainly held my attention. I’ve always been a big fan of Specialized’s iconic steel Stump jumper and rock hopper series since first clapping eyes on them back in 1986/7. 
The romance of adventure, exploring foreign lands on a lightweight go-anywhere bicycle was an obvious draw. Then of course, the thrill of speeding along deserted singletrack, flicking around tree roots-just me, the machine and my thoughts-often fuelled by magazine contraband and rudely interrupted by a teacher’s confiscation!
Detailing suggests this one’s of 1998 vintage and while the cable run places them right in gloop’s path, I like the clean aesthetic and would be inclined to build it into a pared to the essentials 1x10 drop bar adventure bike with old school, wide arm cantilevers, fast rolling knobblies, 12-30 cassette...
Back to the future and speaking of romance, I’m due at a wedding, so will pack camera equipment into the Ka and head off to Bedfordshire.

Front Ends & Fargo Revisited








After all the drama associated with procuring forks, callipers, wheels, rotors and hoops, I headed north to the midlands and to Coventry’s arty fargo district for some photographic inspiration. Plenty to see and further units are being built to accommodate its steady expansion. Back down south, I awoke early and decided it was time to prepare the Kinesis fork and gen up on Avid BB7’s.

The Kinesis steerer proved shorter than many I’ve come across given its racing credentials, so having double checked the measurements against the Ilpompino’s existing ITM Vista, I introduced my Cyclo cutting guide and pruned it to 23cm. Worst case scenario, I could always loose a spacer and adopt a slightly racier stance but there’s no excuse for sloppiness…

For this very reason and given my present workload, I wanted to complete this job in carefully executed stages, so tiredness didn’t lead to mistakes and/or frustration.  I was fairly confident the existing Tektro lever would pull sufficient cable, though a quick rummage through the spares draw unearthed its black, V brake cousin-which proved surplus to requirements.

On a roll, I introduced the crown race before putting the project to one-side, earmarking that evening for transplant surgery.

Everything came together without too much fuss and persuading the Avid’s to play nicely proved easier than I’d expected…After some initial cartwheeling, the state of euphoria bombed when the headset bearings proved baggier than MC Hammers’ trousers.

A new set of caged balls basted generously in white lightning crystal grease, musical spacers and a Gusset “headlock” clamping system dialled things in perfectly. For the time being I’m going to enjoy the new set up sans front mudguard, since the stays were a little short and fouling the calliper’s torque arm-causing pads to drag on the disc.

Axiom probably has a gizmo or two, which will solve this small but irritating puzzle. Failing that I’ll have to seek out something aesthetically compatible with a single stay…

Not Fade Away










We’ve experienced some technical difficulties, leading to delays, a few tense moments and bouts of hand-wringing but with concerted effort; issue 7 of Seven Day Cyclist has now hit the digital newsstands. 

There’s a review of Frog’s junior friendly R70, an everyday/touring tyre group test, interview with Col Velo’s founding fathers Rob Harwood and Will Morgan, tours and much more besides. This Brooks’ C17 Cambium women’s saddle, Topeak waterproof wedge pack and a Waltz cap have just landed on our test bench too.

Ka and I headed up to the midlands for the bank holiday weekend. Generally speaking I’m never without a camera-usually a CSC but I found myself heaping gratitude upon my Samsung WB710 super zoom “travel” compact (a faithful belt loop /nelson pocket companion for several years) when this yellow tandem trike suddenly slipped into view.

Having asked permission, the couple were only too delighted to indulge my fascination and advised it was originally a Peugeot production model they’d bought new in 1979. The Newton conversion isn’t cheap (approximately £1500) but is fashioned from fillet brazed Reynolds 531 and handles much better than cheaper kits, especially over inclement surfaces. Cable operated discs and rear hub brake appear a sufficiently powerful combination for two adults and fully laden touring trailer.

Lovely couple, fascinating build. Knowing their locale’ I’ve dropped a business card and covering note through their door in the hope we can have a more involved chat about their machine and its history. Naturally, there was also further opportunity to capture urban artwork/graffiti porn in sunny Digbeth.  

Once upon a time, I held dear the notion that machines reflect their owners. I recognise this is somewhat over-simplistic and cringe at the suggestion they are extensions of our personalities. However, with time come component upgrades, fresh liveries and modifications that reveals something of our psyche.

Professionally, its’ imperative I remain current where technology’s latest developments, monitoring trends etc. On a strictly personal level, I find people’s winter bikes/daily drivers/workhorses truly fascinating.


So then; to the Ilpompino’s front-end conversion and after careful consideration I’ve concluded the superb TRP hydraulics over-engineered for the purposes of stopping a fixer. Besides, this would push the overall cost of the project to around £300, which isn’t really justifiable on an in-house 4130 cro-moly chassis.

The revised line up consists of user-friendly cable operated Avid BB7 with 160mm disc, which theoretically disperse heat and counteract fade better than their 140mm counterparts.


The front hoop will be an M-part Mavic/ Alex rim and Shimano M525 hub. Despite some concerted efforts to find some suitable forks on these shores, I’ll be importing some ‘cross friendly oversized carbon from the states. Then again, I’m a contrary figure, so spec remains subject to change without notice!
